Test saving a PDF backup to Files and printing it on a device

Description

Since VAULT-3 (#604), a PDF backup only counts as the "Last Backup" once the share sheet reports that it finished. Two ways of saving haven't been tested end to end. In the simulator, the Files picker froze the automation tool, so the share was finished with Copy instead.

On a real device, check:

  • Save to Files: "Backup Saved" appears, and Last Backup updates on the Backups page.
  • Print: the same result, once the print job is sent.
  • Cancelling: cancelling the Files picker or the print dialog leaves Last Backup unchanged. Tapping Done then still shows the "leave without saving" warning.
  • AirDrop or Mail: a spot check of each.

If any of these ways doesn't report completion properly, backups made that way would never be recorded. The Backups page would then show an out-of-date Last Backup, and its green, orange or red staleness colour would be wrong.

Checked in the simulator instead of on a device, as Bradley decided, on a build of main at 3e1e45a4 with a real vault. Screenshots are in ~/Library/Caches/vault-sprint2/qa/VAULT-15/ on the Mac Studio.

Results:

  • Save to Files: pass.
    • Saving to On My iPhone showed "Backup Saved", the file appeared on disk, and Last Backup updated, going from red to green.
    • Cancelling the Files picker left Last Backup unchanged, and Done still showed the "leave without saving" warning.
  • Print: pass. Xcode's Printer Simulator isn't installed, so a local AirPrint printer (ippeveprinter) was used.
    • A sent job showed "Backup Saved" and Last Backup went from orange to green.
    • Cancelling the print dialog left it unchanged, and the warning showed.
    • A print counts once the job reaches the printer, even if the printer then fails it.
  • Staleness colour: pass. It followed Last Backup from red and from orange to green.
  • AirDrop and Mail: not coverable. The simulator's share sheet only offers Preview, Copy, Markup, Print and Save to Files.
    • From the code, Mail should count once the message is queued, even if sending fails later.
    • AirDrop should count once the transfer finishes.

Found, and filed:

  • VAULT-62 (this sprint):
    • Copy counts as a backup. It shows "Backup Saved" with nothing saved, and puts the encrypted backup on the pasteboard.
    • Saving through Markup isn't recorded. Markup's "Save File To" saves a real backup, but the app says it isn't saved.
    • Old backup PDFs pile up in tmp/.
    • Two event dates look swapped.
  • VAULT-63 (backlog): the Password Hint field starts filled with the default "This is my description…" text, which is printed on every PDF.

  • real AirDrop, Mail and Messages
  • iCloud Drive
  • paper output and offline printers
  • third-party share extensions
  • the iPad share sheet
